Hazrat
Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (R.A) was one of the most powerful, courageous, and
influential leaders in Islamic history. He belonged to the respected Banu
Adi clan of the Quraish tribe in Makkah. He was the second Caliph of
Islam after Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) and one of the closest and most trusted
companions of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Whenever the history of Islam and its
rapid spread is discussed, the remarkable name of Hazrat Umar (R.A) stands
prominently among the greatest personalities who played a vital role in
strengthening and expanding Islam.
This
biography highlights different aspects of Hazrat Umar’s (R.A) life, including
his early years, personality, bravery, acceptance of Islam, and his glorious
period of caliphate. His life serves as a powerful example of justice,
leadership, courage, and devotion to Islam.
Early Life
Hazrat
Umar (R.A) was born in 583 A.D in Makkah into the noble Banu Adi family
of the Quraish tribe. In his early life, he was not a Muslim and worked as a
successful businessman. Before accepting Islam, he was known as one of the
strongest opponents of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and openly resisted the message
of Islam.
Youth and Personality
During a
time when literacy was rare in Arabia, Hazrat Umar (R.A) was among the educated
individuals of the Quraish who could read and write. He possessed deep
knowledge of Arab traditions, genealogy, and history. Known for his
extraordinary bravery and strong personality, he gained fame as a skilled wrestler,
confident debater, and fearless young man.
Hazrat
Umar (R.A) was also highly admired for his excellent horse-riding abilities.
His intelligence, powerful speech, and leadership qualities made him a
respected public speaker and a successful ambassador representing the Quraish
tribe in important matters.
His
transformation from a strong opponent of Islam to one of its greatest defenders
remains one of the most inspiring stories in Islamic history.
Acceptance of Islam
Despite possessing remarkable intelligence,
strength, and leadership qualities, Hazrat Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (R.A) had not
initially accepted the message of Islam. In fact, he was counted among the
strongest and most determined opponents of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). His
opposition reached such an extent that he once set out with the intention of
harming the Holy Prophet (SAW) and putting an end to the spread of Islam.
While on his way to carry out this plan, Hazrat
Umar (R.A) came to know that his own sister, Hazrat Fatima bint Khattab (R.A), and her husband had
secretly embraced Islam. Filled with anger, he immediately went to his sister’s
house. At that time, they were learning the Holy Qur’an from Hazrat Khabbab ibn Al-Aratt (R.A).
When Hazrat Umar (R.A) questioned them about
accepting Islam, a heated argument began. In his anger, he struck his sister,
causing her to bleed. However, the moment he saw the blood on her face,
feelings of regret and guilt overwhelmed him. His anger turned into calmness,
and he requested to see the pages of the Qur’an they had been reciting.
His sister asked him to purify himself before
touching the sacred text. After taking a bath, Hazrat Umar (R.A) began reading
the verses from the beginning of Surah
Ta-Ha. As he continued reading, he reached the powerful verse:
These divine words deeply touched his heart.
The message of truth and the beauty of the Qur’an moved him profoundly, and he
immediately recognized that these could only be the words of Allah.
At that moment, Hazrat Khabbab (R.A), who had
been hiding inside the house, came forward and gave him glad tidings. He
informed Umar (R.A) that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) had recently prayed:
“O Allah, strengthen
Islam through either Umar ibn Al-Khattab or Abu Jahl, whichever You will.”
Realizing the truth, Hazrat Umar (R.A) went
straight to meet Prophet Muhammad (SAW). When the Prophet saw him, he asked, “O Umar, what brings you here?”
Hazrat Umar (R.A) replied with complete sincerity,
His acceptance of Islam brought immense joy
among the Muslims and marked a turning point in Islamic history. From that day
onward, Islam gained a fearless defender and a powerful supporter. Hazrat Umar
(R.A) was 39 years old when he
embraced Islam, and his conversion strengthened the Muslim community both
spiritually and socially.
Title of Al-Farooq
In the early days of Islam, Muslims were unable
to offer Salah openly due to the fear and persecution of the leaders of the
Quraish. However, the situation changed dramatically after Hazrat Umar Ibn
Al-Khattab (R.A) accepted Islam. His courage and strong personality gave
confidence to the Muslims, as no one in Makkah dared to confront him.
Hazrat Umar (R.A) boldly suggested to Prophet
Muhammad (SAW) that Muslims should perform Salah publicly at the Holy Kaaba
instead of worshipping in secrecy. Accepting this courageous proposal, the
Muslims marched openly toward the Kaaba, where for the first time the Messenger
of Allah (SAW) led the congregational prayer in public.
Because of his fearless stand for truth and
justice, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) granted Hazrat Umar (R.A) the honorable title Al-Farooq, meaning “the one who distinguishes between right and wrong.” This
title reflected his strong sense of justice, honesty, and unwavering commitment
to Islam.
Hazrat Umar (R.A) as Caliph
After the passing of Prophet Muhammad (SAW),
Hazrat Umar (R.A) was overwhelmed with grief. During this difficult time,
Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) comforted and guided the Muslim community. A discussion
soon arose among Muslims regarding leadership after the Prophet’s death. Hazrat
Umar (R.A), recognizing the unmatched closeness and loyalty of Hazrat Abu Bakr
(R.A) to the Prophet (SAW), addressed the Muslims and strongly supported him as
the first Caliph of Islam.
Following the death of Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A),
Hazrat Umar (R.A) assumed the responsibility of leadership and became the second Caliph of Islam. As a ruler, he
strictly followed the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Prophet
Muhammad (SAW).
During his ten-year caliphate, Islam expanded
rapidly and emerged as a powerful international state. Under his leadership,
the mighty Persian and Byzantine empires were defeated, and
vast regions including Persia, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and parts of Turkey
came under Islamic rule. Many nations entered the fold of Islam during this
period.
Hazrat Umar (R.A) was not only a great
conqueror but also an exceptional administrator and visionary leader. He
established a highly organized system of governance that laid the foundation of
an Islamic political structure. His remarkable achievements include:
·
Implementation of Divine Law as the governing
system of the Islamic State
·
Establishment of a police force to maintain
internal security
·
Financial stipends and welfare support for the
poor and needy
·
Construction of military headquarters and
defensive forts
·
Foundation of new cities to promote Islamic
civilization
·
Development of agriculture and economic reforms
·
Establishment of an organized educational system
Through justice, simplicity, and
accountability, Hazrat Umar (R.A) transformed the Islamic State into one of the
most powerful and well-administered empires in history. His rule remains a
timeless example of leadership based on fairness, responsibility, and service
to humanity.
In short, Hazrat Umar (R.A) stands as an ideal role model for every Muslim.
His life was a perfect reflection of justice, strong principles, deep faith,
humility, and outstanding moral character. Whether in his personal life or as a
leader of the Islamic State, he fulfilled every responsibility with complete
sincerity, dedication, and excellence. His leadership and actions set such high
standards that history presents hardly any example where he performed his
duties with anything less than perfection.
